a quick week

We were surprised tonight to realize it is Friday. The week's gone by quickly for us. We had some delicious (and very cheap) sushi on Tuesday night--walked a little over a mile to the restaurant, something that we both really enjoy being able to do. There are so many advantages to living in town here, and we are doing our best to take full advantage of them. We did finally get the code to the fitness center--I had identified the 4 numbers in the code, which yielded (math people can correct me if I'm wrong) 24 possible 4-digit codes. The flaw in my craftiness was that the code turned out to be 6 digits instead of 4. That made it much more difficult to figure out the code, so we caved and emailed management. We haven't gone there since getting the code, though. Maybe tomorrow.

I discovered facebook's mysterious "other" folder, which contained several messages I really would have liked to have seen months ago when they were sent. I responded to two of them, and have already received replies--I guess people are pretty understanding of ignoring messages for months on end if it is facebook's fault.

We tried to work out some budget things. We're not very good at formal budgeting so we are starting small with things like limiting our eating out to once per week. That was really hard this week because we've both been dreaming of the delicious sushi we had Tuesday night ever since. Jason isn't sure our budget should include the $2 organic grapefruits I've recently become obsessed with.

JC is becoming more trouble all the time. He doesn't like to ride in the cart or be carried when we go shopping because he wants to push the cart himself. It's the only time he walks--holds onto the cart and walks behind it pushing. We have these nesting glass bowls he really likes to play with and he's taken up throwing them this week, with unfortunate consequences. He cries when I won't let him play with the pieces of broken glass. Last week he knocked over a jug of motor oil on our balcony and I've been having a fun time cleaning that up. During the day he spends a lot of time on my back in a baby carrier. It's tiring, but better than having him cry or carrying him in my arms.

Jason is working on computers right now and JC is trying to help. A while ago Jason's mom gave him her computer to fix. She said it wasn't turning on. Jason opened it up and JC started poking it with a screwdriver. After that it worked fine, so maybe JC knows what he's doing after all. Jason doesn't appreciate his help much though.

2012: blogging the end of the world

My new year's resolution was to blog more. Now that it's been a month I'm trying to make good on that. Maybe I can get up to once a week or something--that would be fun. Eventually I might get fancy and add pictures!

To start the year out right, Jason got a new job and we moved. Both have been positive changes. We still own our house (or rather, the bank does and we pay mortgage) and we are close enough to visit our old friends, but we have all the pleasant amenities of city life. We are particularly fond of the sidewalks, which Alex City had almost none of. That sentence feels grammatically incorrect but I'm going to leave it alone for the sake of getting this post written.

We live in a 2 bedroom condo. We have a screened-in balcony, where JC and Kairi both like to hang out (but generally not at the same time since JC pulls Kairi's fur at every opportunity). I like the balcony too, except when our neighbors smoke. Jason is happy at his job, and we have lunch together almost every day again, which is great. Most days I drive into town to meet him and we have a picnic lunch and then walk around for a while.

We are trying to improve our health by exercising more and incorporating more fruits and vegetables into our meals. It helps a lot that we live near an awesome natural food store called EarthFare. We also try to go on walks frequently, and I am working diligently to break into the exercise facilities for our condo community. I've narrowed the possible combinations down to 24, so now we just need to try them all! I would do this the easy way by just asking for the code, but the office doesn't have hours posted and there is never anyone in there when I stop to ask.

We haven't had a normal sunday with our ward here yet for a variety of reasons, but I've already joined a ward playgroup and am hosting it on Wednesday. Last week there were 4 other moms and probably 7 kids ages 6 months through 4 years. Very fun!

JC is one year old now. He has 5 teeth, but doesn't use them for much. He learned a new trick over the weekend--standing up on his own. It's SO cute and makes me and Jason very proud. We can't keep from cheering and clapping when he does it, which confuses him and then he sits down.

Sweet Home Alabama

In a word, our move to Alabama has brought peace.

Peace because we wake up every morning in a house that we can continue waking up in for another dozen years or more, peace because we look out on a big beautiful yard that is all ours, peace because Jason goes off to work each day at a job he likes that also pays the bills, peace because we are surrounded by friends here, peace because this is the life we would have chosen for ourselves a year ago, and now it's ours.

We still have school to finish up, and debt to pay off, and furniture to acquire, and a claim to file because someone hit our car last week, and we haven't been able to close on our house yet (but we are already living in it, thanks to very kind sellers!) and I'd like to find a solution to my hayfever, but overall we're thrilled to be here, establishing a permanent home for our little family.

John Casey thrives on the warm, humid air--he'd spend all day outside if I'd let him (meaning if I'd stay out with him!) and on all the attention he gets from Jason's mom and everyone at church. I thrive on the quiet--we live right on the edge of town, and quite a ways back from the road, too. Jason thrives on being involved and appreciated at work and church. The peace is good for all of us. We've been needing an extra dose of that in our lives.

Dear Friends and Family,

If you didn't know already for one reason or another. It's a boy! We're really excited, and Catherine's getting big! We're planning on naming him John Casey, after my dad and grandfathers, and Catherine's dad. We've been busy with school, work, and each other. I'm chugging along trying to get done to graduate in April with a BS in Geography (GIS). Catherine's taking 9 credits, but she's been really tired and just not felt very good, so it's been hard.

We took our babymoon a couple months ago for my birthday and enjoyed the heck out of the Pacific coast in Southern California. Why does it have to be so expensive to live there?

One of our main priorities right now is to try and find me a job. We'd like to end up in Alabama, but we need to go where the jobs are. A blessing and curse is that I have a large variety of interests from GIS Analysis and Management jobs to Hotel Management, Teaching, Cars, Computers, yep... blessing and curse.

the happiest sound on earth

Jason made a deal with me yesterday: we could eat dinner anywhere I wanted as long as I agreed to eat some meat. I reluctantly agreed to try and settled on In-n-Out, where I ordered an animal style, protein style cheeseburger. Oh it was delicious. I ate it in about 5 minutes and spent the rest of the evening thinking about it. What a spectacularly tasty meal! I don't think I remembered that I don't like meat until long after the burger was devoured.

Weird things like that have been happening lately. For about 3 months, in fact. That is how long I have been hosting the world's most beloved parasite, Roebuck Jr. Junior is undeniably a honeymoon baby, unexpected but oh so welcome. Earlier this week we heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time--hence the title of this post. I would broadcast it constantly through our house if I had the means to do so. What a delightful sound! Jason is as pleased as could be and demonstrates his happiness consistently by treating me with love and care. He brings me glasses of water, fixes meals for me, encourages me to do my homework, rubs my aching back, offers to stay up with me when nausea keeps me up at night, and, as demonstrated yesterday evening, makes sure I get the extra protein I need in my diet. He really is a sweetheart.

Since our last blog post so much has happened. We bought a minivan in Alabama and drove it to DC to visit Kirsten, then drove back to Utah and moved into our lovely apartment. We have a large back yard and spacious inside that stays cool without any type of cooling mechanism because it is underground. We're both in school right now, plodding along without a lot of enthusiasm. Summers weren't meant for studying. We'll take classes in the fall as well, and then I'll take some time off to have a baby and my education plans after that are somewhat nebulous right now.

I know there was more I meant to write about but I am suddenly sleepy so I'll let Jason continue the updates next time he blogs.

Adventure number one of the newlyweds

Today is the thirtieth day of May. It has been one month that we have been married. It has been a great experience for us to bond and get to know each other on this divinely-approved level.

At the same time, we have enjoyed spending time with family and friends at each respective location, after spending time together alone for a few days first.

The first leg of our journey sent us to Olympia Washington where we spent time with aunt Sarah and her son Chris, his wife Monica and son Kaiden. We spent time at a beach on the Puget Sound, played cards, watched Chuck, and barbecued.

On Sunday, we went to a nondenominational Christian church and then the LDS church afterward. We had lots of fun but our time was too short. We'll definitely have to return soon.

Next, we flew to Boston. We were picked up at the airport by Elisabeth and went immediately to the Boston Opera House in downtown. We enjoyed good city fast food Chinese food for dinner that night and MaryAnne picked us up the next morning.

It was a joy spending time in Chelmsford getting to know baby Lily and Johnny and Emma. We adventured to downtown Boston by taking a shuttle from MIT Lincoln Labs. We found a nice rooftop garden for a nap, Chipotle for lunch, and enjoyed a nice walk around the city, inclusive of a visit to H&M and Borders. I also got to ride the T for the first time.

In DC, I got to finally meet James, Molly, and their family (KKMMJJ). James and I bonded over working on his old Civic si, among other things. We museumed in DC and enjoyed explorations. One day there we visited Joe, one of my last mission companions.

Because Molly just had baby Mia, we offered to drive a car to Alabama for them since they were moving the next week. They accepted and we're now in Bama. We leave for Utah again on Wednesday. We'll share more of our adventure later!

A big, great "thank you" to all who supported us as we prepared to get married! We're now happily married and so very in love. We look forward to our new life together and with you as we continue our deep friendship.

We will soon embark on a wonderful journey--a tour of the corners of the US. Salt Lake City to Seattle to Boston, to DC, and to the Heart of Dixie--Alabama, then back to Provo to continue our educational pursuits.

Three Days!

We've been so ridiculously busy (but that's not really a change, is it?). I believe it's been my turn to blog for a while. I have started my new job at the library which is wonderfully flexible. It's very nice, especially preparing for our wedding. I haven't really worked much in the last two weeks, but that's ok.

Three days? Really? We've finished another semester out at BYU. Very exciting. We did fairly well considering we were engaged for a whole semester. People say that's the semester you do poorly academically. It's true. I've done worse though.

I'm very excited, nervous, etc. The volcano in Iceland was a scare for us for a period as we wondered if Catherine's parents could come. We do hope that all will be fine and they will get here ok tomorrow. My mom Sandy gets here tonight and my aunt Sarah gets here tomorrow.

The weather doesn't seem to want to cooperate with an outside reception, so we're planning on an indoor one at a nearby church building (I think, 2550 W 9800 S in South Jordan, Utah--I will post for sure tonight and be sure to contact everyone)

We're done with most plans and are just waiting in anticipation doing the last minutes! We are so happy!

Hi guys!

Jason got the job he's been hoping for--GIS specialist for the BYU Library. It looks like an ideal job for him; flexible hours, an area he's interested in, a nice working environment, can be counted as his required internship, and will look great on his resume. And he'll still be on campus so I can visit him at work sometimes. We celebrated the good news with some Jamba Juice.

That's the most exciting news, but we have more news too: the first batch of wedding invitations has been mailed! We'll send out more tomorrow hopefully. There are 5 weeks to go and we're so happy and excited to be getting married. We still have details to work out (like apparently ponytails aren't standard hairstyles for brides, but it's the only hairstyle I'm good at, so that needs to be fixed) and school sure is busy (we're both working on some final projects) but we're really enjoying this preparation time.

Stress, stress, stress!

There has been much stress in the lives of two young people (hmm.. I wonder who I'm talking about) with school and getting a wedding organized.

We took a nice break the other day and went up to Salt Lake for some Chipotle. Well, it's usually a break anyway. We decided that Catherine needed some driving experience so we borrowed Joe-Nathan's car. Catherine did a great job on the freeway (with a little supervision and encouragement). It's amazing what you can do with absolute support and encouragement.

Yesterday at dinnertime, the weather was so beautiful--it really felt like spring on the first day of the season. We took a stroll down to south Provo for some Mexican food, a nice hour walk. It was great; we'll probably make that a Saturday tradition.

We're doing about as well as we can in school considering everything we've got on our plate. I've applied for some new jobs on campus because my Fall school schedule isn't going to work with my current job [plus it's been really stressful lately in that position with some changes in organization in the text department]. It's hard to believe that I've only got a year of school left. It's kind of liberating. We have been considering different options for Catherine to finish what she needs to at BYU within that time frame. We shall see.

I realized today that we're getting married next month. That's right folks. Sure, it's still 58 days away. But this is March and we're getting married in April. Woah woah woah. At this point I feel like the time is going by at exactly the right pace. I'm excited for marriage, but there are a lot of practical things to take care of that will keep me busy for the next 58 days and I'm glad to not have to rush things.

This also means the semester ends next month. I have mixed feelings about that. A mystery illness (the mystery may be solved tomorrow when I get some lab test results) has had me down and out for the last week, and consequently I've fallen behind in schoolwork. I hope to make up the missed work, but I'm not totally confident about my ability to do so, especially since I'm still a long ways from healthy. Jason is doing well in school as usual, but he still stresses about it more than I do. This is annoying because I normally react to stressed-out-Jason by flirting, which is a pretty good distraction, but I've been so drugged/pained/contagious lately that I can't do a lot except lie on the couch and watch him stress.

We have a baptism on Saturday that Jason's conducting. It's for a girl in the ward, and as ward mission leader he helped get discussions with the missionaries set up for her so she could be taught about the gospel. She is really happy to be getting baptized.

We've got a registry up and running at BBB, and are in the final stages of preparing our invites for printing (mainly we choose colors and wordings and Jessica makes it all fit together beautifully). Once I get better we'll be able to work on some more wedding preparations--and enjoy more time together.

Our engagement has certainly been eventful so far. We've faced some really tough situations together and have overcome some major challenges, and through it all we've had a lot of fun times. Something I love about Jason is that he really builds me up and encourages me to be a better person. I've made a lot of positive changes with his help and have a more optimistic outlook on life than I've ever had before.

I still have a ways to go before I'll feel completely ready to be a wife--but hey, that's what the next 58 days are for...

Today happens to be my 2-year mark for being home from my mission. It's also my favorite number (62) days until we get married.

Catherine is still sick. We went to urgent care tonight and well, she doesn't have strep at least. The problem with that is that they don't know what she has right now. I doubt she'll be going to stake conference tomorrow, though, but we'll see.

Yesterday we went to Salt Lake for one of my class assignments in which I had to play the part of a customer of a commissioned salesperson. You can read my rhetorical analysis of the encounter here.

We're still dealing with getting everything sorted out with the wedding and all the plans and conflicts that go with. School has been hard this last week too with a few midterms for each of us.

Well, it's early and we're tired, so bed time.

As the title suggests, I'm sick today, and there are 65 days left until the wedding.

It feels so close. We have a lot of things in place already. Wedding planning brings out some personality differences: for example, Jason likes to plan things far in advance and stick with that plan. I like to keep things flexible and finalize it all at the last minute. We both stress about each others' methods. It keeps us entertained and we get to practice our communication skills a lot.

It's midterm week--or month--and we're both busy with those. We try to get our schoolwork done on campus and that means spending all day away from home. Yesterday we spontaneously had a much needed date night: dinner at Chipotle, some wedding registry scanning, and then home where we made fudge and watched some Olympic ice skating. It was so nice to spend time really together--too often lately our together time is just sitting next to each other while doing homework or other chores.

Yesterday the highest Catholic authority in America, Cardinal Francis George, spoke at BYU. What a blessing it was to participate, even remotely, in that experience. I was impressed with the respect students showed him. About 12,000 (including Jason) attended in the Marriot Center while many more (including myself) watched the broadcast from other parts of campus. We stood as he entered the Marriot center. We stood to recite, in unison, the Lord's Prayer, led by a Catholic professor. We stood, after he finished his remarks, for a standing ovation.

The Cardinal's speech was inspirational, moving, and from the heart. He expressed sincere appreciation for our faith's efforts to support Christian values and our willingness to collaborate with the Catholic Church in these efforts. He made us laugh by telling us about his experience conducting the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He talked about religious freedom and religious unity, morality and Christianity. Even in the far corner of campus where I watched the broadcast, I felt touched by the Spirit.

My turn

It was nice and somewhat scary to have the chance to meet Casey last week. In a way I'm glad it's over. My family situation is so different and my expectations match that difference. I'm going to have to learn how to be a father and husband, not by anyone in my family per se, but of the knowledge that I have of what I should be. I'm glad that I did get to meet him to calm both our fears. We will get along well. We're family now.

Wedding plans are going well. So much to do. Catherine and I both do not particularly care for crowds, but we will probably have to get over that temporarily for our wedding day. We're planning on having about eighty people at the lunch (which will function as our reception), and thirty at the sealing earlier that morning. It's unfortunate that some of my family that I'd love to have there can't attend due to the strict rules regarding temple attendance--more specifically, the requirement of LDS Church membership to attend. They are such wonderful people and I love them. I hope they do not hold it against me. It's for the greater good, and I think they will come to understand that with time. I guess I need to be more proactive in teaching the gospel to my family.

Weddings certainly are expensive. Wow. More so since we're very frugal people. If it were up to me, I'd donate our budget to the Church for missionary work and be done with it. I'm hoping the memories we share from that day will be worth the expense. We'll still try to keep costs minimal.

We bought airline tickets just a few days ago for a month-long adventure that begins just a week after our wedding. We'll be traveling to go see some family and spend some time with them. Salt Lake to Seattle to Boston to Baltimore to Birmingham, then back to Salt Lake to get ready to attend Summer term classes. I'm excited. I love traveling (within the US--I haven't had the opportunity to travel overseas yet). I think this trip will be great. I'm excited to see New England.

Well, 71 days left until we get married. I'm nervous; I'm excited; I'm anxious; I'm scared. I know that it will be ok so long as we have the same vision we do now. We love each other dearly and we'll be just fine. "All you need is love." And we have that, and so much more.

5,000 miles and love

Pa Neinerschts arrived yesterday afternoon from Austria-via-L.A. It was great to see him. He took us out to dinner at Rodizios, which is like a vamped up Tucanos--tablecloths and all. I tried to remember last time I ate out with tablecloths on the table. Was there a last time? At any rate the atmosphere was great, the food delicious, and the company superb. We talked about our families--the Neinerschts, the Bakers, the Roebucks, the Roebucks-to-be. It was a lovely time.

After dinner Jason and I returned tired to my apartment (the poet in me wants to write re(turned )tired so that it is retired and returned tired--I'm weird like that--) where we teased my roommate and her boyfriend about their choice of entertainment, Lost. What is up with that show, really? I've seen parts of several episodes because my roommates watch it, and every time it's been a steady stream of blood, yelling, scary music and screaming. Anyway, then we talked a lot. One of the best things about our relationship is how much we enjoy talking to each other.

Waking up this morning I thought about love. Love that brought Pa 5,000 miles to meet his future son-in-law. Love that is the reason we will have so much family at our wedding even though the timing is not convenient for everyone. Love that is the reason we are committing to eternally support and care for each other.

We went to the Oquirrh Mountain Temple on Friday night for baptisms. It was cold and dark outside but the temple was bright and inviting. Kind workers showed us the waiting room upstairs when we mentioned we would have guests for our wedding who couldn't be at the sealing. It's a beautiful and comfortable room. The men checking our recommends enthusiastically welcomed us to the temple, as did the workers in the baptistery. It was a quiet evening with only a handful of patrons. Before leaving we sat in the chapel area for a few minutes and talked quietly. I felt renewed.

What love God shows for us when he provides temples for quiet reflection and spiritual peace. What love he shows by providing a way for us to have eternal love and closeness with our families.

We're grateful for his kindness and we love him for his love.

We've got so many things going on these days. School is hard and kicking our tails. I got in an interesting mood the other day and decided to see if adventurescontigo.com was available. It was, so here we are.

We spend a lot of time together and we seem to make things work with planning our wedding, school work, work, play, Church, Chuck, and other very important activities. I really love our relationship. We walk to and from school together nearly every day. We stay too busy to get into trouble. I enjoyed our trip to Park City last week to get Catherine's wedding dress. It was quite the experience. Catherine and I enjoy violating societal norms and apparently my seeing the wedding dress is a major faux pas. Becca survived my presence though, it seems.

We went up to South Jordan on Saturday to visit my friend Norm from work. He has generously offered his back yard (and church building as a backup for weather) as a possible place for our wedding lunch. This is such a great option for us because it's so close to the temple and it's in a nice neighborhood on a large (1/3 acre) lot. I think we'll accept his offer--we can't really find anything else that will work as well. And you certainly can't beat the price, although we'd love to pay him back with some yard work. (I have a soft spot for yard work--I LOVE IT!)

We've been looking at housing trying to find somewhere for Fall & Winter too, and we think we've found the place. We already have a place lined up for Summer term, subleasing from a friend that will be going to Army 'camp' this summer, a good deal for both of us. We will keep you updated for sure.

We thoroughly enjoy our New Testament (Gospels) teacher. We both have him for different sections of the course and slightly different schedule. He normally teaches at the Jerusalem Center, but has resumed his post at BYU's main campus here in Provo. He has some really great stories and great perspectives from his time in Israel, plus his Church service as Bishop. ... Just a crazy guy.

Sweet Home Alabama

The drive from the Atlanta airport to Buttston, Alabama was a cheerful one even though we were both tired. Even in January the forest is lovely and the air smells delicious. We rolled the sunroof open and turned up the country music and soon we had arrived.

Jason’s home is on five acres of wooded land. There is a greenhouse and a yellow school bus and the house has an oldfashioned charm. We were greeted by three dogs and then by Jason’s mother, Sandy.

It rained most of the time I was there, and we kept a wood fire going in the kitchen to stay warm and dry. We visited family and friends and had a bonfire in the yard. Alabama is a beautiful state; one I think I could call home a few years down the road.

The little branch was my favorite part of the visit. There were some 35 people there, but some were visiting from other wards. We received our first wedding gift—a beautiful white throw blanket crocheted by a sister Foshee, who taught Jason in Sunday School years ago. The church building is small with narrow hallways and an interesting setup. Everyone was very welcoming to me and delighted to see Jason again. I very much look forward to going back sometime, and not only for the 2-hour block schedule.

We’re back in Provo now, returning to school for both of us and work for Jason. We had our engagement pictures taken this morning which was a lot of fun. We’ll post some as soon as we get copies.

Life 2.0

We seem to have a lot going on these days. It's very nice, but can be stressful at times. I'm working on understanding how things work. My family is so very different from Catherine's but we seem to have a good perspective on what we want together and are willing to work on it. I have a good feeling about our ability to communicate.

It was quite the experience being separated for a few weeks over Christmas break, but we survived. She went home to her parents' place in Austria and I went home to Alabama. We both had our challenges at our respective destinations. Although I am not exactly qualified to speak about her experience, I'd like to say that mine was labor-intensive. My mom takes care of my grandfather and it's just them at home. She is very busy with her responsibilities with him as well as her employment and she finds relief in my visits as I am able to help around the house. It's not a huge secret though, that I really enjoy working.

We are now back in our current comfort zones planning on a late April wedding (April 30th in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple in South Jordan, Utah to be exact). We have reservations at the temple, my mother's airline tickets, and our hotel reservations at an undisclosed location. We are going to look at an apartment tomorrow for Summer term. We just want Summer term at this point, because we are planning on a road-trip honeymoon to Alabama where we would have a great time (among things) and have fun working around the house for the summer, then come back to Utah for summer term. At this point, we wouldn't be able to find good housing for Fall/Winter because of the Provo-isms that occur in well, Provo.

It's very exciting for us. We certainly do love each other and we have a fond appreciation for the restored Gospel of Christ.

Army Style Dining Out

If we look uncomfortable it’s because we are. :-) Neither of us likes formal occasions to begin with, and Dining Out was a disorganized mess. It was held in a Stake Center in Orem, allowing us the joy of braving rush hour traffic in the snow to get there.

It was surely an adventure!

The Saga Begins

A long, long time ago.

Or actually, tonight at like 7pm... we made our engagement official. Yes, that is right. Beautiful Catherine Christensen has agreed to become Catherine Agnes Roebuck.

We plan on 30 April 2010.
